Goldman, which has helped launch and finance thousands of hedge funds, said almost all newcomers survive their first year but that only 62% of all funds remain in business after five years.
The research also found that the top 20 funds have made a combined $755.4 billion in profits since inception, well above the $655.5 billion in total managed assets. A hedge fund is a limited partnership of private investors whose money is managed by fund managers.
The study was conducted by Capco, the financial services consultancy and solutions provider. A surprisingly low 38 per cent of hedge funds failed as a result of investment risk alone. It is estimated that there some US$600 billion is invested in approximately 6,000 hedge funds worldwide.
This outcome is very likely because around 80% of all new hedge funds fail – not necessarily in the first year, but within the first few years before they can raise enough AUM to survive. If this happens, your options depend on why it failed.
Of the 10 classifications examined, funds of hedge funds have the longest median survival time, estimated at 7.5 years. A subsequent study by the SEC,14 using the Van Hedge, database also finds the median survival for hedge funds to be 5.5 years.
But lately, Wall Street has been wondering if hedge funds have reached Peak Pod. Returns dropped markedly at many multistrats in 2023. The average fund in the class returned 5.4%—even as the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 cranked out total returns of 45% and 26%, respectively.
Higher returns are hardly guaranteed. Most hedge funds invest in the same securities available to mutual funds and individual investors. You can therefore only reasonably expect higher returns if you select a superior manager or pick a timely strategy.
Hedge funds offer the potential for high returns and diversification benefits, but they also come at the cost of higher fees and less regulatory oversight. As with any investment, you should do your own research to determine whether they make sense for your portfolio.

Citadel has generated roughly $74 billion in total gains since its inception in 1990, making it the most successful hedge fund of all time. Founded by Ken Griffin, Citadel was the second best-performing fund in 2023, raking in approximately $8.1 billion in profits last year.
Overall, the consensus is that hedge funds will continue to grow but will adapt to lower fees, greater use of technology, and increased access to retail investors.
Strategies Used by Hedge Funds
Some strategies, such as managed futures and short-only funds, typically have higher probabilities of failure given the risky nature of their business operations. High leverage is another factor that can lead to hedge fund failure when the market moves in an unfavorable direction.
In recessionary environments, hedge funds (particularly macro strategies) have protected investor portfolios from stock market declines.
The money is a big draw as well: if you're at the right fund and you perform well, you can earn into the mid-six-figures, up to $1 million+, even as a junior-level employee. The top individual Portfolio Managers can earn hundreds of millions or billions each year.
The 2 and 20 is a hedge fund compensation structure consisting of a management fee and a performance fee. 2% represents a management fee which is applied to the total assets under management. A 20% performance fee is charged on the profits that the hedge fund generates, beyond a specified minimum threshold.
