With Starfield's early access release (and our Starfield review) upon us, those planning to play on PC will want to make sure to first take a look at the system requirements. On the low end, you're not being asked for a top-of-the-line rig to play the game, but all players will need a lot of free storage space--as well as an SSD. Here's a look at the required PC specs for Starfield, including the GPU and CPU.

The official Steam page and Xbox Store page for the upcoming open-world RPG were previously updated, allowing users to see what would be required. With the early launch now drawing ever closer, developer Bethesda has more formally announced the game's minimum and recommended PC specifications.

The minimum specs are fairly reasonable and will require an AMD Ryzen 5 2600X processor or an Intel Core i7-6800K, as well as an AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti graphics card. In terms of the requirements for the recommended way to play, an AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel i5-10600K will be demanded instead, alongside an RX 6800 XT or RTX 2080. We already know Bethesda has teamed up with AMD to optimize Starfield, which looks as if it will mean Nvidia features such as DLSS won't be supported.

It's noted on both minimum and recommended that players will need an SSD--and the game will take up 125GB of space. However, the Xbox Store listing notes 140GB being required, so it remains to be seen just how much you may actually need.

The specs don't indicate what kind of performance users will experience, so it's unclear what frame rate and quality settings these requirements will target.

For console, Bethesda and Xbox have confirmed that Starfield will be locked at 30fps on Xbox Series X|S. It will run at 4K resolution on the Xbox Series X and 1440p on the Xbox Series S, but the framerate will be 30fps for performance consistency.

Starfield is set to launch on September 6, 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X|S, with an early September 1 release coming for those who buy the Constellation edition or an upgrade for the Game Pass edition.

What SSD is needed for Starfield? ›

Although a SATA Solid State Drive would do the trick for Bethesda's space journey, players are recommended to get an NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) since it's a future-proof choice. The type of SSD players can get depends on their motherboard type.

Do you need a high end PC for Starfield? ›

To meet Starfield minimum requirements, Bethesda says you'll need a GPU on par with either the AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti. The latter arrived back in 2017, so it's safe to say you won't need the best graphics card to get up and running.

Is Starfield CPU or GPU intensive? ›

Starfield is, overall, a more CPU intensive game. This is thanks to its engine and use of AI. These are tasks that rely more on the CPU. This is not to say that the amount of GPU power needed is exactly a walk in the park.

Does Starfield run better on SSD? ›

Not Starfield per se, which is mostly good – when it's running off an SSD. On a hard drive, it's a completely different game, which is to say its structual integrity is snapped to bits like the chocolate on a freshly bitten Magnum. In addition to the largely benign, often hilarious bugs you get on an SSD, HDD!

Can Starfield be installed on an external SSD? ›

If the drive and the port you are using are usb 3.1, then it might work fine as usb 3.1 is technically capable of supporting the same transfer rate as a standard non raid sata SSD drive. If both are usb 3.2 Gen 2 or above then you shouldn't have any problems.

What is the best budget GPU for Starfield? ›

Best $300-$400 graphics cards for Starfield

Here, we recommend the RX 6700 XT. Our XFX RX 6700 XT card was able to garner 63.8 AVG FPS on the game's high preset at 1080p.

How much RAM does Starfield use? ›

We've tested the game with 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB of DRAM to see how it measures up, and our results line-up with the recommended specs—you do need at least 16GB, and preferably 32GB, to enjoy the game at its best.

What is the best processor for Starfield? ›

Intel Core i9-13900K

To run a demanding game like Starfield, you need a CPU powerful enough to handle various elements like AI NPCs and more. That said, it shouldn't be surprising that our top pick is the Intel Core i9-13900K, a gaming and productivity powerhouse.

Is 4 GB of VRAM enough for Starfield? ›

So yes, as long as you don't mind playing at low + DLSS performance and perhaps downscaling, yes, 4GB Vram will do the trick. Originally posted by LilYungChitn: starwars Jedi survivors lists 8GB minimum, just like starfield, and you can manage 40fps on low 1080p.

Should I upgrade GPU or CPU for Starfield? ›

Starfield is very cpu intensive, so I'd honestly probably upgrade that first.

Why is Starfield so hard to run? ›

The problem, as many have pointed out, is the game relying on the CPU to do its work. Starfield is a very CPU-bound title. This means that most of the processing and performance calculations for the game are done within the CPU Cores.

What is the best system for Starfield? ›

The MSI Infinite RS (13th-gen Intel, RTX 40 series) is one of the most premium gaming PCs money can buy. It offers a top-tier Intel Core i9 13900KF paired with an MSI RTX 4090 GPU, both of which handle Starfield and pretty much every game title with ease at the maximum resolution possible.

Which drive should I install in Starfield? ›

I highly recommend installing the game on the C: drive. I had the game installed on my 2nd drive and it will constantly crash. After a re-install the game runs fine.

Can I play Starfield on a hard drive? ›

Starfield works on HDD!!! The game also works perfectly on HDD, just install Starfield Script Extender and Disk Cache Enabler.

Will a gtx 1080 run in Starfield? ›

It should run, but expect to fiddle with settings. But if i had to make a guess, you could probably run it decently at medium settings, 1080p. But i would you will struggle to maintain a steady 60fps.

How much storage will Starfield take up? ›

That's because Starfield is going to take up a sizeable 100.19GB on Xbox Series X|S. And that's just the Standard Edition. Premium Edition owners should expect its install size to jump up to 117.07GB.
