Sao Paulo Holiday Weather Overview

Sao Paulo is Brazil's largest city and is the economic hub of the country. Although many visitors come here on business, the city boasts an international fashion and arts scene which is increasingly drawing tourists to the city in its own right.

The Climate of Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo has four distinct seasons with a winter, spring, summer and autumn, but the climate is heavily influenced by the monsoon. Locals say that it's possible to experience all four seasons in one day, as the rapidly changing weather, especially in the winter, can catch residents and visitors alike by surprise.

As a general rule, Sao Paulo's winters are very mild, and comparatively dry; most rainfall occurs in the summer months, when it can rain on as many as 15 days of the month, giving a humid touch to the very warm summer temperatures.

Sao Paulo in the Spring

From September to November, Sao Paulo's spring weather is generally warm and sunny. Day time average highs are around 25°C, with evenings at around 12°C. If you're visiting Sao Paulo in the spring, pack lightweight clothing but bring some with long sleeves, or take a shawl or cover up for the cooler nights. Don't forget something waterproof for those spring showers.

Spring is a good time to experience Sao Paulo Fashion Week, or to explore the Sao Paulo Zoo and the shops of Paulista Avenue.

Sao Paulo in the Summer

Summer in Sao Paulo runs from December to February, and the temperatures really climb - average highs in the daytime are just short of 30°C, with nights at around 20°C. It's very humid too, as this is the height of the rainy season in Sao Paulo. Expect around 10 inches of rain each month, with rain every 1 in 2 days on average.

Summer is the peak time to enjoy Sao Paulo's many parks, with Ibirapuera Park being many people's favourite - it is packed with museums and cultural events as well as natural beauty. If you're visiting Sao Paulo in the summer, allow time to acclimatize yourself to the heat and humidity.

Sao Paulo's carnival usually falls in February, so this is a peak time to visit the city - be aware that it can be very crowded, and expensive.

Sao Paulo in the Autumn

Autumn, from March to May, is one of the most popular times to visit Sao Paulo. Temperatures are still very warm, but the rain eases off a little, allowing visitors to explore both the indoor and outdoor delights of the city. With daily lows of only around 16°C, you won't need too much in the way of warm clothing, but do bring something with sleeves and perhaps a lightweight jacket.

Sao Paulo's carnival usually falls in February, so this is a peak time to visit the city - be aware that it can be very crowded, and expensive.

Sao Paulo in the Winter

From June to August, Sao Paulo experiences its coolest period. Average daily highs in this period drop to around 20°C, with night time temperatures at around 10-11°C. It can go much lower than that, however, and it's not unheard of for temperatures to dip to 3 or 4 degrees.

This is also Sao Paulo's driest period, and you will be unlucky to catch a shower at this time. It's the least popular time to visit, so tends to be cheaper - and there is still plenty to see and do, with another Fashion Week, plus all of Sao Paulo's museums and attractions open for business.
