Muncy’s Austin Johnson wins Powerade wrestling tournament title (2024)

Muncy’s Austin Johnson weathered the storm and came out as a Powerade champion at 215 pounds, beating extremely tough competition throughout the tournament, which concluded Friday evening.

Johnson beat Waynesburg’s Eli Makel by decision in the finals, 8-3. Johnson was the only local wrestler to take home a championship title. Johnson reached the 215 final by defeating Armstrong’s Connor Jacobs by major decision in the semifinals, 13-4.

Central Mountain’s Dalton Perry (133) and Luke Simcox (139) both reached the semifinals at their respective weights. Perry advanced to the finals by defeating Wadsworth, Ohio’s Jaxon Joy by decision, 5-2, while Simcox lost a tough close contest at 139 by decision to St. Edward, Ohio’s Ryan Bennett, 4-3.

Williamsport’s Cael Nasdeo lost at 121 in a close match to Wyoming Seminary’s Luke Lilledah by decision, 1-0.

Simcox fell in the third-place match to State College’s Pierson Manville, 5-2, via decision.

Nasdeo took home a fifth-place medal by defeating Montoursville standout Branden Wentzel at 121 by major decision, 13-2. Wentzel advanced to the medal round thanks to a 2-1 decision win over West Allegheny’s Cooper Smith, 2-1.

In total, 66 teams competed at the Powerade Tournament from Pennsylvania and elsewhere along the East Coast, including Ohio, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and West Virginia. State power Wyoming Seminary finished in first place with 233.5 points and Malvern Prep took second (182).
