Ever wondered what kind of a voice do women find attractive?
According to research*, female listeners rate a male speaker as more attractive if his voice pitch is lowered and his speech tempo is increased.
What is a voice pitch? Pitch is the rate at which your vocal cords vibrate. In non-scientific terms, it is the degree of highness or lowness of your vocal tone. Women like men with a deeper voice. No surprises here!
How can one lower it? Most of the times, we are pretty much stuck with the quality of voice that we have been blessed with. Enter voice coaching!
Here’s the good news. You don’t have to go against nature to actually change the quality of your voice. But what one can do is enhance the texture of voice by understanding some basics –
-Listeners like voices where words are fully enunciated and clear.
-Speaking from the stomach (exhaling air from your diaphragm while speaking) as opposed to speaking from the throat gives a better throw to your voice. (Doing exercises like loudly exhaling an “ah ha” can give you an idea of what taking from tummy sounds like)
-Your voice should have warmth – even a hint of smile while you speak translates to your voice and is instantly received as a welcoming to the ears.
What is speech tempo? Speech tempo is the measure of the number of words one speaks in a given amount of time. According to the said research, women enjoy increased speech tempo – which means the speaker can speak about 150 words per minute (an average being 1000-130 words per minute). For a general reference, the way we speak when we know a topic very well, is a high speech tempo - we pause lesser while speaking and this in turn conveys self-confidence.
To conclude, don’t worry about changing the pitch of your voice. Research may exist but what pays off in the end is two most important things – how powerfully your words leave your mouth and second - which words do. Happy Speaking!
