Is it cheaper to live on campus or off campus at FSU? ›

More Cost Effective

At Florida State, rental rates of residence halls range from $2,740 to $4,050 per person, per semester. Living off-campus, you will be able to find more reasonable rates, in addition to all of the other benefits to living off campus.

Toasters are only allowed to be used in the kitchens. Kitchens are provided in the buildings.

Some estimates say that living off campus can save as little as $600 per school year, or as much as $6,000. But again, it all depends on the cost of rent near the school, as well as the number of people sharing the apartment. The more students in the apartment, the less everyone pays.

Florida State University has a total undergraduate enrollment of 32,936 (fall 2022), with a gender distribution of 43% male students and 57% female students. At this school, 20% of the students live in college-owned, -operated or -affiliated housing and 80% of students live off campus.

Residents may have overnight guests in the halls with the permission of their roommate(s) and suitemate(s). Guests may not stay for more than three days in any 30-day period without written permission from the Residence Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator. Cohabitation is not permitted in any residence hall.

Housing Accommodations and Rates

Bathrooms in all of the suite-style halls have one shower and toilet that are shared by 4 students. Residents of the suite are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms. One sink is located in each bedroom, except in Salley Hall where the sink is located within the bathroom.

Students are forewarned that preferences cannot be guaranteed and completion of the contract creates a financial responsibility for the entire contract period regardless of the room assignment or the date that the room assignment is made.

Leach Pool and Spa

The Leach Pool is a 16-lane by 25-yard indoor swimming facility with two 1-meter and two 3-meter diving boards. A complete spa area is located just off the pool deck and is equipped with two whirlpools, two steam rooms, and a sauna. Visit our Aquatics pages for complete details.

Students will be able to select up to ONE roommate request after submitting their housing contract. By mutually requesting another student, you are authorizing that individual to select a room for you.

There are two kitchens located in each Salley Hall. One is located on the fifth floor and one is on the seventh. Residents have access to a microwave, a stove, an oven, and a sink.

In addition, students living off campus are nearly twice as likely to get a GPA below 1.0 as those living on campus. Not only does living on campus affect your grades, but it can also affect the length of time it takes to graduate. College students living on campus are more likely to graduate on time.

Usually more expensive

The total cost to live on campus is usually higher than off campus. The student fees and the dorm cost can add up. It will be good to break down the total for room and board on campus and compare that to rent and utilities to see which option is best for your personal budget.

(Sometimes) More Affordable: Depending on where you're staying, living off campus can be less expensive. Like if you're living with your parents, for example. But if you rent your own place without roommates, you'll probably be paying more to live off campus.
