At Hallmark Youthcare, we treat adolescents with emotional and behavioral issues triggered by past traumatic experiences. We strive to empower youth and their families to overcome their difficulties and fulfill their potential. Utilizing Building Bridges, and Trauma-Focused Therapy, we are committed to providing trauma-informed and individualized support to residents and their families. Hallmark Youthcare is dedicated to providing the best clinical and trauma-informed services across the state and work every day to promote a culture of healing and safety.
Hallmark Youthcare worked to serve children and families across the Commonwealth of Virginia through the use of residential psychiatric services, outpatient therapy, and community-based services. This model and philosophy have been embedded and embodied throughout our organization and remains the keystone of our treatment today.

Hallmark Founded Is Founded In 1976
Originally called Psychiatric Institute of Richmond, located in the Highland Park area of Richmond, it was a Treatment Center/Special Education Program serving children, adolescents, and adult patients.
1976
Program Expanded To 50 Beds
In 1992, the residential program expanded to 50 beds and moved to its current setting in Goochland County, Virginia.
1992
Purchased by Hallmark Systems
Hallmark Youthcare expanded to 84 beds and focused solely on adolescent residential treatment and assessment and diagnostic services
1995
Hallmark Youthcare opened a residential program
This program is called the TSAY Program (Treatment for Sexually Acting Out Youth) and is licensed by the Department of Behavioral Health. This program has consistently been one of the most popular services our organization offers.
2009
Transitioned out of community-based services
Hallmark Youthcare opened a program dedicated to the treatment of victims of human trafficking called our TEC Program (Treatment for Exploited Children) and worked with state leaders to develop a curriculum that would support the specific clinical and safety needs of this population.
2014
Obtained our ARTS Certification
Through the process of obtaining our ARTS Certification in 2018 and developing an ASAM approved substance abuse program, Hallmark Youthcare opened a two-unit program specifically dedicated to the treatment of Substance Abuse and Substance Use Disorders in early 2019.
2018
Hallmark Youthcare has transformed services to accommodate the needs and ever-changing mental health trends across the state. Upon moving to the Goochland Campus, Hallmark Youthcare further expanded their residential services and implemented a specific track for assessment and diagnostic services. This program was designed to allow for more rapid and informed clinical recommendations for children and their families. Hallmark Youthcare also offers a Residential Private Day School licensed by the Department of Education and accredited by VAISEF. This allows for a trauma-informed educational setting that is conducive to learning and supporting behavioral and emotional concerns.
At Hallmark Youthcare we work with families and communities to play an active and vital role in the treatment and recovery of youth. Hallmark Youthcare implemented weekly therapeutic visitation sessions that involve specific interventions and therapeutic support from counselors to facilitate greater family engagement and to promote a culture of open communication and change. In 2017 Hallmark Youthcare expanded visitation days, lengthened the time families can come to the facility, and provided the opportunity for any family member to engage in therapy even if they are unable to come to the facility through the use of video-based communication.
Hallmark Youthcare prides itself in identifying and responding to specific community needs and developing programs to support our community. In early 2017 a deficit in substance abuse treatment for adolescents in the state of Virginia was recognized by the Clinical Team at Hallmark Youthcare.
Hallmark Youthcare continues to strive towards supporting the needs of our community through trauma-informed clinical services for special populations. Recently, Hallmark Youthcare has begun offering Assessment and Diagnostic Services for youth who are sexually acting out, misusing substances, and have potential histories of sex trafficking. It is our hope that through the many services we offer, that Hallmark Youthcare will provide the clinical services needed to promote a culture of healing and recovery for youth and families across the Commonwealth.

Hallmark Youthcare is committed to providing a safe and transformative environment to at-risk youth in Richmond and Central Virginia. We strive to be a valuable resource for our youth, their families, and community leaders during treatment here at Hallmark. We serve at-risk youth, ages 11-17, and their families. These youth have manifested emotional and behavioral disturbances. Their diagnoses may include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse disorders, ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

What kind of educational services are offered?
McAfee Academy is our on-campus school. As an accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF), McAfee Academy is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education to offer both regular education and special education services, including those outlined on the Individual Education Plan (IEP). We work with the public schools to ensure that all educational needs are met, including SOLs, and that the youth is smoothly transitioned back into public school.
Do you address substance abuse issues?
Yes. Hallmark Youthcare employs psychiatrists and program therapists with expertise in addiction. We offer specialized individual, family and group therapies for youths with these issues.
Does Hallmark Youthcare offer acute or crisis stabilization services?
No. If you are in need of these services, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. In the event that a resident develops the need for acute care, staff at Hallmark Youthcare work closely with Goochland Emergency Services.
What is the average length of stay for a resident at Hallmark Youthcare?
The length of stay depends upon the needs of the resident. On average, residents require 6 months of treatment.
What are the requirements for visitation/family therapy?
Hallmark Youthcare strongly encourages family contact. Regularly scheduled visitation hours are held Saturday and Sunday from 1-4:30 p.m. Your Program Therapist will adjust visitation to accommodate any difficulties you might have with the regular schedule.
Therapists at Hallmark Youthcare facilitate face-to-face family therapy on a weekly basis. Hallmark believes strongly in working with the families. When a family is unable to participate in person, therapeutic contact between youth and family is supplemented by phone sessions.
In addition, a Family Support Group, led by Program Therapists, is offered on a monthly basis to assist parents and family members in learning to understand and more effectively respond to their youth. We highly recommend participation in this group.
What is the level of interaction between boys and girls in the residential program?
The boy’s units and girl’s units are located on opposite sides of the facility. Boys and girls are not allowed to go into each others living space. All residents are under direct supervision of staff at all times. They participate in school activities and some recreational activities together.

How quick is the referral/admission process?
The process requires information to determine the appropriateness of placement, funding resources, space availability and completion of admission documentation. Our intake department works closely with you to ease and expedite this process.
What insurance is accepted?
Hallmark Youthcare accepts Medicaid and community funding (typically through FAPT, CSA or schools) for residential services. This includes Virginia Medicaid, Maryland Medicaid, and Washington, D.C. Medicaid.
Can a parent refer an adolescent to Hallmark Youthcare?
Yes, though Residential treatment requires independent verification by a physician that the youth meets the medical necessity for the care. Our Intake Department personnel will explain these processes to parents and assist them with admission.
What is FAPT?
(Family Assessment and Planning Team) is a panel of individuals from the community who, with input from the youth and family, assess the strengths and needs of the youth, determine what services are needed, and develop a service plan for the youth and family.
How do I qualify for Medicaid?
Contact your local Department of Social Services/Human Services Department and request an application for Medicaid. Apply as a “Family of One” under the adolescent’s name.

The Sanctuary Model
All programs at Hallmark Youthcare use the Sanctuary Model. The Sanctuary Model® represents a theory-based, trauma-informed, trauma-responsive, evidence-supported, whole culture approach that has a clear and structured methodology for creating or changing an organizational culture. The model works to provide a safe, supportive, secure and therapeutic environment to promote healing while building on the strengths of each child.
Safety:attaining safety in self, relationships, and environment
Emotional management: identifying levels of various emotions and modulating emotion in response to memories, persons, events
Loss: feeling grief and dealing with personal losses and recognizing that all change involves loss
