7 Amazing Autumn Scents to Recreate at Home

Who is ready for fall leaves, hoodies, pumpkins, and s’mores? I definitely am ready because I love this season. As the leaves change colors and the temperature starts to dip, the air around us seems almost saturated (but in a good way) with all of the most amazing fall fragrances. These aromas make us feel warm, comforted, and nostalgic. Let’s explore some of the most iconic fall smells that we can recreate at home. Then, we’ll get to the DIY ideas.

1. Crisp Apples and Orchard Air

Visiting an apple orchard during fall is an olfactory delight. The sweet, tangy aroma of freshly picked apples, combined with the earthy scent of fallen leaves underfoot, creates an unforgettable fragrance. Whether you’re biting into a juicy apple or simmering a pot of spiced apple cider, the essence of orchard air captures the essence of autumn.

2. Pumpkin Spice Everything

From homemade pies to overpriced lattes, pumpkin spice is EVERYWHERE during autumn! Heck, it even plays a starring role in all of the funniest fall memes! For those who love it, it’s the most magical time of the year! There’s nothing quite like that comforting blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger!

3. Woodsy Campfires

Cooler evenings are practically custom-built for gathering around crackling campfires. The smoky scent of burning wood, combined with the earthy scent of damp leaves and the brisk evening air, creates an ambiance that’s both rustic and inviting.

4. Spiced Baking

Fall is synonymous with baking, especially as we get closer to Thanksgiving. The aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, gingerbread cookies, and hearty loaves of bread permeates the air, making us feel all warm and gooey inside!

5. Fallen Leaves

The distinctive scent of dried, fallen leaves underfoot is both a quintessential and completely unique autumn experience. It’s hard to describe this fall fragrance because it really depends on so many factors, like the type of leaves, the level of moisture, and the overall environment. It’s kind of earthy, a little musty (but not in a gross way), and definitely “woodsy.”

6. Earthy Woods and Moss

While you can smell the aroma of fallen leaves pretty much anywhere in the north, this one is a bit different. The combination of damp earth, moss-covered rocks, and decaying leaves in the forest doesn’tsound like it would be appealing, but it’s actually one of the most tranquil and soothing fall smells ever.

7. Harvest Spice Markets

Fall harvest markets are bursting with so many sensory wonders. The mingling scents of freshly harvested vegetables, dried herbs, and local farm goods create a symphony that embodies the essence of the harvest season.

Now that we know which fall fragrances we want to recreate at home, let’s talk about HOW to do just that in the most natural way possible.

Ingredients:

  • Dried Oak or Maple Leaves
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Whole Cloves
  • Dried Orange Peel
  • Dried Apple Slices
  • Whole Nutmeg
  • Allspice Berries
  • Juniper Berries
  • Pine Needles (optional)
  • Essential Oils: Cedarwood, Patchouli, and Frankincense

Instructions:

  1. Gather a handful of dried oak or maple leaves. If they’re not already dried, you can do so by placing them in a single layer on a baking sheet and leaving them in a cool, dry place for about a week.
  2. Break a couple of cinnamon sticks into smaller pieces. Add a tablespoon of whole cloves, a teaspoon of allspice berries, and a few juniper berries to the mix. Grate a small amount of whole nutmeg into the blend. These spices will contribute warmth and depth to the potpourri.
  3. Add a handful of dried orange peel to the mixture. You can create your own by peeling an orange and leaving the peels to air dry for a few days.
  4. Slice a dried apple into thin rounds and include them in the potpourri.
  5. OPTIONAL STEP: If you have access to pine needles, consider adding a small amount to the blend.
  6. In another small bowl, combine a few drops of cedarwood, patchouli, and frankincense essential oils. Mix them together to create a fragrant blend that mimics the earthy and woodsy scent of fallen leaves.
  7. Combine all the dried ingredients and the essential oil blend. Mix them together to evenly distribute the scents.
  8. Place the potpourri mixture in a decorative bowl or an airtight container. Allow the ingredients to mingle for a day or two.
  9. Once your natural potpourri is ready, just put it in a room where you want to enjoy it! You can also tie the mixture in a DIY sachet or wrap it in decorative fabric to use as a fragrant decoration.

This DIY natural potpourri captures the nostalgic scent of fallen leaves, filling your home with the earthy and comforting aromas of autumn. Feel free to adjust the quantities of each ingredient to achieve your preferred balance of scents.
